What Is A Vein Scan Used For
A vein scan uses ultrasound technology to determine the anatomy and blood flow through the veins of your body. Our specialists use vein scan to identify and treat various vascular issues such as:
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): It is a condition where blood clots develop in the veins of the legs, causing pain, swelling, and redness. It can cause lethal complications if left untreated.
- Varicose veins: In this condition, the superficial veins in the legs become enlarged, twisted, and bulging. A vein scan can identify the damaged valves and abnormal blood flow that cause varicose veins.
- Venous insufficiency: It is a condition where the veins in the legs do not function properly, causing the blood to pool. It can cause chronic swelling, skin changes, ulcers, and infections.

How Do We Perform Vein Scan
At our practices, we use the latest technology to perform the vein scan in less time. The procedure is simple and usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes. First, you will lie on an exam table, and we will apply a gel to your skin over the area we want to examine. Our specialist will move a small probe called a transducer over your skin that sends and receives sound waves, creating an image of your veins on a monitor.
The image will show the structure of your veins and the blood flow within them. We may also use a Doppler ultrasound technique to measure the speed and volume of the blood flow.Â
