When Is A Holter Monitor Needed
Our doctor may recommend wearing a Holter monitor if you have an unidentified heart problem. This is a small, battery-operated device that records your heart activity for 24 to 48 hours to identify any irregularities.
We may suggest Holter monitor testing in some of the following cases:
- Diagnosing an arrhythmia
- Monitor your heartbeat
- Identify the cause of palpitations or dizziness
- Assess the oxygen flow to the heart
- Determine if the medications are working
Based on the readings of the monitor, our cardiologists may suggest further diagnostic tests or plan treatment measures to address your concerns.
What To Expect When Getting A Holter Monitor
At our practice, we attach the Holter monitor during an in-office appointment. To begin the process, we will attach small electrodes to your chest that connect to the monitor. We may need to shave the chest areas where we will place the electrodes. You will need to wear the monitor for the duration of the test, usually 24 or 48 hours. During this time, you can continue with your normal activities, except for bathing, swimming, or using any devices that may interfere with the electrical activity of the device.Â
We also recommend noting down your symptoms during this period. After the test, you will return to our clinic to have the device removed. We will analyze the data for abnormalities and discuss the treatment options accordingly.
